Why Spring Blooms

Typically, the spring bloom, which occurs between March and May, has the highest bloom. These phytoplankton blooms are brought on by the availability of light and nutrients. The sun warming the water causes a layer of warm water on the surface and cold water deeper down, which is why the blooms happen in the spring.
