The Most Wanted Rare Houseplants of 2022

For the last few years, I have specialized in rare and exotic plants. You probably know some special houseplants already, for example, the Aroids family in which you find the monsteras and the philodendrons.

The Top 10 Most Wanted Rare Houseplants

". Many plant lovers have bought one of these by now, and some of those varieties have become more common, and are not so special anymore. So, I made a new list of rare plants for 2022 with highly sought-after plants. All plants on this list are collector's items and are not readily available. The plants are not in a particular order.

Maranta Leuconeura Light Veins

The Maranta Leuconeura `Light Veins', is very special, and very rare. It's a white-vein maranta, also known as the White Nerve Plant. Because it's such a rare houseplant, they are sold for a lot of money, especially the larger specimens. The Maranta Light Veins is a colorful cultivar with bright midrib and lateral veins, a feathered, light greenish-yellow central zone, and a greenish-black outer background.

Maranta NoID

With a little imagination, the Maranta NoID's leaf markings resemble a cat's whiskers. For this reason, this special houseplant is also called the Cat Mustache. It is a special houseplant that is almost nowhere to be found! Originally, Maranta's come from Brazil. Here they crawl over the bottom of the tropical rainforest. Although many people keep them as hanging plants, they are real creepers! Because Maranta's naturally grow in the shade of other plants and trees, they prefer a shady spot. Although Maranta's prefer shade in the wild, they can tolerate a more light spot as long as they get used to it slowly. With more light, Maranta's grow faster and the leaf markings become more visible.

Philodendron Gloriosum

I mentioned this one in my blog from last year as well, the Philodendron Gloriosum is still an absolute stunner! With its big heart-shaped velvet leaves with beautiful white veining, the Philodendron Gloriosum is a highly sought-after rare houseplant. It's a crawler, not a climber, so make sure the pot is large enough to crawl in. Prices have dropped a bit compared to last year's price bonanza, because some professional growers are propagating them at the moment, bringing more of them into the markets.

Epipremnum Amplissimum Silver Stripe

The Epipremnum Silver Stripe is native to Australia and New Guinea. The leaves of this epipremnum are elongated and glossy and have beautiful silver stripes. The leaves are narrow, and green with hints of a bluish grey color. This elegant shape of the leaves gives it a special charm. And is one of the reasons this plant is highly sought after. The Epipremnum Silver Stripe has very fast growth and can adapt to any environment. Because its vines are long the urban jungle effect is assured. Another name for epipremnum is pothos. Some call this plant Pothos Epipremnum Silver Stripe.

Epipremnum Pinnatum Variegata

The Epipremnum Pinnatum Variegata is a beautiful, rare houseplant. With the right care and support, this variegated plant can grow very large! These plants are already taking their mature form by showing the fenestrations (holes), which is very special!

Epipremnum Global Green

The Global Green also belongs to the Pothos Epipremnum family. The name Global Green owes the plant to the fact that the name-giver wants to see that this variety conquers the whole world with its beautiful leaves. All species that fall under the Epipremnum category have beautiful color shades in their leaf structure, but Epipremnum Global Green is different from the rest. The main color is deep green with beautiful light green structures adorning the leaf. And each leaf has different color shades. In the sunlight, the softer green of the leaves seems to give off a glow. Like all species that fall under the Epipremnum, the Global Green has heart-shaped satiny leaves with an air-purifying effect by reducing formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, and benzene in the environment where they are located.

Syngonium - Four Special and Rare Variegated Houseplant Varieties

Everybody probably knows the syngonium already but in the last 2 years, some variegated versions have become super popular! There are many types of variegated Syngoniums, also pinks and reds are there. You can read about a pink syngonium here: "Syngonium Pink Perfection - The Best Pink Indoor Plant?" But not so special!

Syngonium Pink Perfection

There are currently 4 different very rare variegated syngonium types that are highly sought after. These are Syngoinium Three Kings, Syngonium Aurea Variegata, Syngonium T25, and the Syngonium Albo Variegata.

Syngonium Three Kings

The most common of them all, but still hard to find, is the Syngonium 'Three Kings' aka 'Magic Marble'. A stunning smaller-leaf Syngonium with beautifully variegated foliage. The Syngonium Three Kings features a pale green or grey-green background with various dark shades through the arrow-shaped leaf, creating a beautiful contrast.

Syngonium Three Kings

One of the most stunning varieties of Syngonium. The Syngonium Three Kings are currently grown by some growers in Holland and Belgium. This plant, when treated well, can explode in growth and is then easy to trim and propagate another plant.

Syngonium Aurea Variegata

With its yellow variegation, the Syngonium is a very special rarity among houseplants. As its leaves unfurl, they are light green. With later stages of growth, they become darker and the characteristic yellow variegation becomes visible. These small spots make the Syngonium Podophyllum Aurea Variegata unique.

Syngonium T25

The Syngonium T25, also known as the Syngonium Dwarf Variegata, is one of the rarest Syngoniums with uniquely variegated leaves. Syngonium T25 has very characteristic green and white leaves. And on some leaves, this white color is translucent, and at the edge of the leaves, there's a pink or red outline.

Syngonium Albo Variegata

There are so many different types of syngonium, it's almost a bit overwhelming. Just check out this variegated Syngonium for example. Some growers have started propagating larger amounts of Syngonium Albo Variegata in 2021. Just look at this sea of these:

Musa Dwarf Cavandish Variegata

The Musa Dwarf Variegata is a special plant that is hardly available anywhere. The new leaves are dark green with pale yellow variegation, fading slowly to light green. This gives a nice contrast against the dark brown spots that this plant naturally has. This plant grows very fast and its leaves can get huge! Although the green variant of the Musa Dwarf Cavendish (banana plant) now brightens up many households, this variant still gives a tropical feel to your plant collection.

Compared to the non-variegated Dwarf Cavendish this is such a slow grower! He loves lots of light and moist soil. When he makes a new leaf I always think “oh here we go he reverted” but after a few days he always shows his true color. 💛💚

Anthurium Silver Blush

The full name is Anthurium Crystallinum Silver Blush. A very special little plant. The leaves of Anthurium Crystallinum Silver Blush have dark green coloration with a velvety appearance. The leaf veins are silver-green along the major veins with the abaxial (lower) surface a much paler green than the top of the blade.
